News, photos and events from NUBC and Blue Star Club

Blue Star Club

NUBC has its very own alumni racing club, the Blue Star Club. Over the years many crews have reformed to race as Blue Star Club at Rutherford Head (early December) and the slightly sunnier Durham Regatta (mid-June).

Rutherford Head and Jim London Dinner

The first alumni event of the NUBC Calendar is Rutherford Head, a 5km race from Scotswood Bridge, past the boat house and under Newburn Bridge. Always a big club event it is also an opportunity for alumni to get back on the water as members of the Blue Star Club, a club exclusively for ex-NUBC rowers. Both rowers and spectators are then invited to the famous Jim London Dinner held in memory of James London an alumnus of NUBC. Always late autumn the event is a great opportunity to meet up with old friends and meet current NUBC rowers.

Head of the River Races

For Women’s and Men’s Head of the River Races the club is based at The Rutland Pub. Situated on the North side of Hammersmith Bridge the first floor balcony provides excellent viewing for a generally packed out NUBC-only room. The new HORR Dinner on the Saturday of Men’s Head is a good opportunity for everyone to discuss the successes or disappointments of the day and as always enjoy some great rowing chat.

Henley Barbeque

Saturday evening of Henley Royal Regatta is the NUBC Barbeque and the last event of the calendar. An informal affair, it provides a good rallying point for Alumni and rowers (at least those who are not still racing on Sunday!).
